Green IT: Optimizing the use of technology tools

Green computing is the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently. The goals are to reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote recyclables or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.

Modern IT systems rely upon a complicated mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative must be systemic in nature, and address increasingly sophisticated problems. Elements of such as solution may be comprised of items such as end user satisfaction, management restructuring, regulatory compliance, disposal of electronic waste , telecommuting, virtualization of server resources, energy use, thin client solutions, and return on investment (ROI).

Reducing The Carbon Footprint
Climate change has become one of the major challenges for mankind and nature. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere in ever rapidly growing volumes are recognized to be responsible for this change. Carbon footprint quantification, analysis and reduction are key to preventing this. For instance - enhancing energy efficiency, mitigating carbon emissions by means of green energy and then compensating for remaining GHG emissions by investing in carbon offsets - with a final goal to becoming carbon neutral

Climate change has become one of the major challenges for mankind and the natural environment. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere in ever rapidly growing volumes are recognized to be responsible for this change. Carbon footprint quantification, analysis and reduction are key to preventing this, for example, by enhancing energy efficiency, mitigating carbon emissions by means of green energy and then compensating for remaining GHG emissions by investing in carbon offsets, with a final goal to becoming carbon neutral.

A carbon footprint is a "measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide". It is meant to be useful for individuals and organizations to conceptualize their personal (or organizational) impact in contributing to global warming. A conceptual tool in response to carbon footprints are carbon offsets, or the mitigation of carbon emissions through the development of alternative projects such as solar or wind energy or reforestation.

Mindlogicx has evolved itself as an environmentally responsible organization. With the organization, there is a concern over the environmental impact of the increased usage of computing technology which has far reaching ramifications on the sustainability of business IT operations. Increasing energy costs and expanding power utilization needs are having a direct impact on business profitability. Mindlogicx wants to be eco-friendly and develop improvements within the organization that would increase energy efficiency and eliminate power wastage by inactive servers and workstations.
The Green campaign was run within the organization on World Environment Day and after a brief discussion; the forum was thrown open to the employees for implementation ideas. All ideas were documented and the top five ideas were short listed by the management and included in the Green Policy for Mindlogicx.

The Green policy for Mindlogicx includes the following:

Plant saplings: In the true green sense, all employees took the initiative to plant saplings within the office campus and give names to the trees. The saplings have been adopted by the employees to care for the trees planted by them

Use double-sided printing devices: Duplex printing or printing on both sides of a sheet of paper not only reduces the size of print out but also saves trees. If the printer does not have the duplex option, the employees have been instructed to manually duplex print the sheets of paper to reduce the use of excess paper
Turn lights off when leaving workstation

Curb phantom electricity: Many appliances still consume energy even when turned off. Items left plugged into the wall, such as a cell phone charger or laptop adapter, can leak more than 20 watts of power

Put your monitor to sleep: Monitors are responsible for more than one-third of a computer's energy consumption - even with screen savers - the best way to conserve energy is to set the monitor to sleep or power off when you're away for an extended period. As a part of the policy, all computers are powered off after a period of 10 minutes
Mindlogicx recognizes the benefits of using green technology to reduce its carbon footprint and to minimize waste in line with the constant rise in energy costs and the threat of global warming. For further information on the same, please contact us at info@mindlogicx.com
